Free SEO Lesson: SEO Fundamentals

SEO (search engine optimization) is the work of making a website easy for search engines and AI assistants to find, understand and recommend, so it earns visitors without paying for ads. It rests on three pillars: technical SEO, on-page SEO and off-page SEO.

What SEO is

SEO improves a website's visibility in unpaid search results by optimizing its content, structure and authority. When someone searches for a product, a service or an answer, search engines try to show the most helpful, trustworthy pages. SEO is the practice of becoming one of those pages.

Today the same work also helps AI assistants such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Gemini, which read web pages to build their answers and cite their sources.

How search engines work: crawl, index, rank

1. Crawl 2. Index 3. Rank
How search engines work: they crawl pages, index what they find, then rank the most relevant matches for each search.
  • Crawl: search engines send bots that follow links to discover pages.
  • Index: they read each page, work out what it is about and store it.
  • Rank: when someone searches, they order the indexed pages by relevance, quality and trust, and by how well each page matches what the searcher wants.
  • If a page cannot be crawled or indexed, it cannot rank, which is why technical SEO comes first.

The three pillars of SEO

  • Technical SEO: making the site fast, secure, crawlable and free of errors such as broken links, slow pages and duplicate content.
  • On-page SEO: matching each page to what people search for, with clear titles, headings, helpful content, internal links and signs of experience and expertise (E-E-A-T).
  • Off-page SEO: earning mentions, reviews and backlinks from relevant websites, which tell search engines your site is trusted.

Search intent: what the searcher really wants

Every search has an intent: to learn something (informational), to find a specific site (navigational), to compare options (commercial) or to buy or book (transactional). Pages rank highest when they answer that intent directly, in the format the searcher expects.

SEO in the age of AI search

AI Overviews and answer engines favour pages that answer questions clearly near the top, show who wrote them and why they can be trusted, use structured data, and back claims with dated evidence. Good SEO and AI visibility now go together.
