Quick answer: To hire a good SEO specialist in the Philippines, look for verifiable results in your industry, hands-on technical skills, clear reporting and enough time-zone overlap to work together comfortably. Ask for dated screenshots from tools like Ahrefs or Google Search Console, not promises. This guide explains what to check, which questions to ask and which red flags to avoid.
I’m Jay Say, an SEO specialist based in the Philippines. I have worked in SEO since 2020, and I currently manage SEO for 30+ client websites in the US and Australia. What follows is the advice I would give a friend who wants to hire someone like me.
Why do businesses hire SEO specialists from the Philippines?
Businesses in the US, Australia and Europe hire Philippines-based SEO specialists for three main reasons:
- Strong English communication. English is widely used in business and education in the Philippines, which makes reporting, content work and client calls straightforward.
- Useful time-zone overlap. The Philippines is on GMT+8. That covers the full Australian business day and overlaps with the US evening, so work often moves forward while you sleep.
- Experience with international clients. Many Filipino SEO specialists, including me, have years of experience with US and Australian markets, from local service businesses to YMYL industries like healthcare and law.
What should a good SEO specialist be able to do?
SEO is a broad field. A specialist you hire to own your organic growth should be comfortable with all of these:
- Technical SEO: crawlability, indexing, redirects, site architecture, Core Web Vitals and schema markup.
- Keyword research and search intent: finding what your customers actually search for, not just high-volume terms.
- On-page optimization: titles, headings, internal links and content that matches intent and shows expertise.
- Local SEO if you serve specific areas: Google Business Profile, citations and location pages.
- Link building: earning relevant links without risky shortcuts.
- AI search optimization: making content easy for Google AI Overviews and other AI answers to understand and cite.
- Reporting: clear monthly reports in tools like GA4, Search Console and Looker Studio, with next steps.
How do you check that an SEO specialist’s results are real?
Anyone can say “I got a client to page one”. The way to separate real results from marketing is to ask for evidence you can check:
- Dated tool screenshots. Ahrefs, Semrush, Search Console or GA4 dashboards with dates, showing traffic, keywords and change over time.
- Results in your industry or a similar one. Healthcare, legal and insurance sites need different trust signals from e-commerce or local trades.
- A clear story behind each result. What the problem was, what they did and what changed. Vague claims without a process are a warning sign.
- Consistency across their profiles. Their LinkedIn, portfolio and website should tell the same story about roles and dates.
For example, my case studies show anonymized client results with the source and date of every figure, such as an urgent care brand earning 4,400+ organic visits a month.
What questions should you ask before hiring?
- What would you check first on our website, and why?
- Can you show results for a site like ours, with dates and the tool they came from?
- How do you build links, and what will you never do?
- What will your monthly report include, and who will we talk to?
- How do you handle AI Overviews and AI search?
- Which hours will you be available in our time zone?
What are the red flags when hiring an SEO specialist?
- Guaranteed rankings. No one controls Google’s results. A promise of “number one in 30 days” usually means risky tactics or a vanity keyword nobody searches for.
- Bulk link packages. “500 backlinks for $50” links are usually low quality and can hurt your site.
- No access to your own data. You should own your Google Search Console, GA4 and Google Business Profile accounts.
- Reports without explanations. A good report says what changed, why and what happens next.
How long until you see results from a new SEO specialist?
Expect measurable movement in three to six months for most sites, depending on competition and where the site starts. Technical fixes can show sooner. On one 18,700-URL medical website, a cleanup that cut broken URLs by 82% came alongside 2,500 more total visitors in the same period (read the case study). Competitive markets, like criminal defense law, tend to grow steadily rather than overnight.
Should you hire a freelancer or an agency?
Both can work. The right choice depends on how much of the work you want handled and who you want to talk to.
| Freelance SEO specialist | SEO agency | |
|---|---|---|
| Who does the work | The person you hire | A team, often with an account manager in between |
| Communication | Direct, with the specialist | Usually through an account manager |
| Breadth | Depends on the specialist’s skills | Wider: design, development, paid ads, content |
| Good fit for | Businesses that want one expert to own SEO | Businesses that need many marketing services at once |
Whichever you choose, ask who will actually do the work on your site, and ask to see their own results rather than the company’s in general.
What should the first month look like?
A good start is structured and visible. In the first month you should expect:
- Access to your Google Search Console, GA4 and Google Business Profile, shared with the specialist rather than created under their account.
- A technical and content audit of your site, with findings ranked by impact.
- Keyword and competitor research that shows where the realistic opportunities are.
- A written plan for the next 90 days, with priorities you have agreed on.
- A baseline report, so future progress can be measured against where you started.
How do I work with clients?
I start with an audit of your site and competitors, agree on priorities with you, then work in focused monthly cycles with a plain-English report each month. Right now that process covers 30+ client websites earning about 16,000 organic visits and an estimated $25,000 in organic traffic value a month (Ahrefs, October 2026).
