How to Get Your Business Cited in Google AI Overviews

Quick answer: To get your business cited in Google AI Overviews, make your pages easy to understand and easy to quote. That means answer-first content, clear facts about who you are and what you do, specific evidence with dates, structured data that matches the page, and a site search engines can crawl. Google says there are no special technical requirements for AI features beyond solid SEO fundamentals, so the basics still come first.

I optimize client sites for both classic rankings and AI answers. This work is often called answer engine optimization (AEO) or generative engine optimization (GEO). Here is what I focus on.

What are Google AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of some Google search results. They answer the question directly and link to the web pages they draw from. Being one of those linked sources can bring visibility even when people don’t scroll to the regular results. Other AI tools, such as ChatGPT search and Perplexity, also cite sources in a similar way.

Does my page need to rank to appear in AI Overviews?

To be shown as a supporting link, a page has to be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search. In practice, pages that already rank well for related queries have a much better chance. That’s why technical health and classic SEO remain the foundation (see my technical SEO audit checklist).

How do you write content that AI answers can quote?

  • Answer first. Put a direct, self-contained answer in the first one or two sentences under each heading.
  • Use question headings. Phrase headings the way people ask: “How long does SEO take?” rather than “Timelines”.
  • Be specific. Use real numbers, units, names of tools and dates. “4,400+ organic visits a month (Ahrefs, October 2026)” is easier to trust and quote than “lots of traffic”.
  • Use lists and tables for steps, comparisons and results.
  • Keep paragraphs short and one idea each.

Why do entities and consistency matter?

AI systems try to understand who is behind a page. Make that unmistakable:

  • State your business or personal name, role or service, and location clearly on the home and About pages.
  • Use the same name, description and contact details on your website, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile and directory listings.
  • Show authorship on articles, with a real author and a link to their profile.

Which structured data helps?

Structured data doesn’t guarantee a citation, but it removes guesswork. The types I use most often are Organization or Person, LocalBusiness or ProfessionalService, WebSite, BreadcrumbList, Article with an author, and FAQPage where a page has real questions and answers. The markup must always match what visitors can see.

Should you let AI crawlers access your site?

If you want to be cited, AI search crawlers need to be able to read your pages. Check that your robots.txt doesn’t block crawlers like Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot by accident, and that your important content is in the HTML rather than hidden behind scripts or logins.

How do you measure AI search visibility?

Measurement is still developing. Traffic from AI Overviews is included in Google Search Console’s Performance report as regular web search data. Watch impressions for question-style queries, check your key topics in AI tools by hand each month, and track referral traffic from AI assistants in GA4.

Will AI Overviews reduce my website traffic?

For some simple questions, people now get their answer without clicking. That is real, and it is why being cited matters: the businesses named and linked in an AI answer still gain visibility and trust, while the ones left out lose both. Pages built around specific services, locations, case studies and comparisons also tend to attract people who want to act, not just read, and those visitors still click through to choose who to work with.

What should you avoid when optimizing for AI answers?

  • Mass-produced content. Pages created only to target search queries, without real expertise, are exactly what Google’s spam policies warn against.
  • Unsupported claims. Calling yourself “number one” without evidence gives an AI system nothing to quote. Specific results with sources do.
  • Markup that doesn’t match the page. FAQ or review markup for content visitors can’t see breaks Google’s guidelines.
  • Hiding key content. Text that only appears after interactions or inside images is harder for crawlers to read.

How does this apply to local businesses?

Local businesses have an advantage: the facts AI answers need are concrete. Keep your Google Business Profile complete and consistent with your website, give each location its own page with real local details, and answer the questions customers ask before they call, such as hours, services, insurance accepted or service areas. I use the same approach for multi-location clients, including an urgent care brand with 4,400+ organic visits a month.

How long does it take to appear in AI Overviews?

There is no fixed timeline. Changes to existing, well-ranked pages can be picked up as soon as Google recrawls them, often within days or weeks. New pages first need to be crawled, indexed and trusted for their topic, which usually takes longer. Treat it like classic SEO: improve the pages that already earn impressions first, then build new content around the questions your customers ask, and review the results every month.

Where should you start?

  1. Fix technical blockers so key pages are crawlable and indexed.
  2. Rewrite your most important pages to answer the main question first.
  3. Add dated evidence: results, figures and examples.
  4. Add accurate structured data and keep your entity details consistent everywhere.
